Our History

CU was founded by Executive Director Guille Sastré, who developed the concept of working with families in a holistic manner during her tenure as a social service worker assisting people in a wide range of settings. In 1997, she and ten families with whom she had worked created Creciendo Unidos. Ms. Sastré developed the structure and curriculum for the basic family program and the families helped her refine it.  They conducted the program initially in the Murphy Elementary School District, serving the families of Spanish-speaking students who showed signs of trouble at home. Today, CU has established itself as its own 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, serving over 1,300 individuals each year. It does this with a staff of just 7 and the significant manpower of over 500 trained volunteers who have all come out of CU’s programs.

Our Mission and Vision
Creciendo Unidos, which means “Growing Together” in Spanish, is a small, Latino-led nonprofit that has been quietly expanding in the Phoenix metropolitan area since 1997. The mission of Creciendo Unidos (CU) is to build communities by enabling people to take care of each other, mobilizing neighborhoods, developing leaders, and taking responsibility for creating a healthy community that is worthy of their children.  This vision is met by focusing attention on the family unit.
