CRECIENDO UNIDOS
“Growing Together”
Our Mission and Vision
Creciendo Unidos, which means “Growing Together” in Spanish, is a small, Latino-led nonprofit that has been quietly expanding in the Phoenix metropolitan area since 1994. The mission of Creciendo Unidos (CU) is to build communities by enabling people to take care of each other, mobilizing neighborhoods, developing leaders, and taking responsibility for creating a healthy community that is worthy of their children. This vision is met by focusing attention on the family unit.
Our History
Creciendo Unidos (CU) is a grass root organization whose vision is to build communities by enabling people to take care of each other, mobilizing neighborhoods, developing leaders, and taking responsibility for creating a healthy community that is worthy of their children. This vision is met by focusing attention first on the family unit
CU was founded by Guille Sastré. Ms. Sastré developed the concept of working with families in a holistic manner over a 10-year period, during which she learned what does and does not work as she served people in a wide range of settings. In 1997, she and ten families with whom she had worked created Creciendo Unidos. Ms. Sastré developed the structure of the program and created the basic curriculum. The families helped her to refine it. CU is a culturally sensitive program that powerfully impacts families in need. Soon CU began to draw recognition from other communities. The American Indian Institute approached Ms. Sastré and contracted her to replicate the CU curriculum with tribes in 4 states.
In 2000, Social Venture Partners Arizona (SVPAZ) selected CU as an investee and hired a professional evaluator from the University of Arizona who was very impressed by the impact and the extraordinarily good results the program has demonstrated with the families it serves. In his report to SVPAZ, he commented, “We never see these kinds of results”.
